I'm Diane Walton's Roommate

This true story is dedicated to everyone who has ever attended a BYU single ward Fast and Testimony meeting where people are known to bear testimony about how much they love their roommates.

Once upon a time, there was a returned missionary, coed attending BYU during the summer. Her name was Diane Walton. Diane lived with 3 other lovely girls, Sarah, Susan, and Emma in a small apartment off-campus. Sarah and Susan had been in the ward for a while, and Diane had moved in that past January. Emma was a good friend of Diane's from high school and had just moved into the apartment.

On Emma's first Fast and Testimony meeting in her new ward, she got up to bear her testimony. It is a tradition in college wards to introduce yourself and tell everyone where you are from.

Emma introduced herself, "Hi, My name is Emma *Jones, and I'm Diane Walton's roommate."

Sarah and Diane exchanged looks.

"What was that all about?" asked Sarah.

"I have no clue." Diane shrugged.

A while later Sarah went up to bear her testimony. Halfway through, she said, "By the way I'm also Diane Walton's roommate. She is very nice." and then kept talking.

The congregation chuckled. Diane slouched a little in her seat.

Later Susan got up to share her testimony. She also mentioned that she was Diane Walton's roommate.

Everyone laughed. Diane started looking for an escape.

Later a cute guy that Diane kind of liked, bore his testimony. "My name is *John, and Diane Walton is my neighbor."

Many other people spoke about the blessings of temple service and other things. It really was a nice testimony meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting, one of the members of the bishopric got up. "This has been a wonderful testimony meeting." he said. "There were two strong themes today. We learned that the temple is the place to go, and Diane Walton is the person to know."

A visitor from the stake presidency suddenly jumped up and whispered in the counselor's ear.

"Brother *Ellis wants to know who Diane Walton is, will she please stand up?" asked the counselor.

I will never forget that Fast and Testimony meeting, and no I didn't get any dates from it.

I found out later that Emma had thought that I was really popular in the ward (as if!) and just wanted everyone to know that she was my roommate.

*Names have been changed to protect the guilty, and also because I don't remember the Stake visitor's name.
